Procedures

  1. Record the color of each mineral sample.
  2. Gently drag each mineral across the porcelain tile.
  3. Observe and record the color of the streak powder each mineral sample made.
  4. Scratch each mineral by using your fingernail, the copper penny, the nail, and the glass plate. (fingernail = 2.5, copper penny = 3.5, nail = 4.5, and glass pate = 5.5)
  5. Record the hardness value of each mineral.
  6. Place each mineral on the reaction plate.
  7. Carefully place one drop of HCl acid on each mineral.
  8. Record if any mineral(s) bubbles.
  9. Determine the mass of a mineral sample by using the balance.
  10. Fill the overflow can with water and allow the water to drip out of the spout.
  11. Wait until the water stop dripping.
  12. Use the graduated cylinder to catch water from the overflow can after a mineral sample has been dropped into the can.
  13. Record the volume of the mineral.
  14. Calculate the density of the mineral.
  15. Repeat steps #9 ~ 14 for each mineral.
  16. Use the Mineral Guide to identify each mineral.
